What is solar thermal and how does it work?

Solar thermal systems, also called solar water heating systems, use heat from the sun to warm domestic hot water.

A solar thermal system uses solar panels which are fitted to either your existing roof, or a new roof, depending on your project. These panels collect heat from the sun and use it to heat water stored within a hot water cylinder. There are two types of solar panel you can install:

  • Flat plate system which can be fitted on your existing roof or integrated into a new roof structure

  • Evacuated tube system

We work with a number of manufacturers across the industry to ensure that we always install the correct panels and fitting system for your property.

What are the advantages of solar thermal?

  • Lowering energy bills – Sunlight is free, so once you've paid for the initial installation, your hot water costs will be reduced

  • Environmental Impact – Our expertly designed systems can offer significant reductions in your carbon dioxide emissions

  • Reliability – Our solar thermal systems are fully guaranteed and offer a system life of approximately 20 years

If solar thermal is not suitable for your property we can also advise across the range of renewable heating systems and technologies available, including air source heat pump, ground source heat pump and solar PV, to find the most suitable system for your home.

Financial incentives

You may be able to receive payments for the heat you generate using a solar thermal system through the UK Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive, this can provide a significant contribution towards the overall cost of the installation.

As an approved MCS installer, our installations are typically installed with a VAT rate of only 5%.

FAQ

+ What is the difference between Solar Thermal and Solar PV?

Solar PV is a renewable energy technology that uses the power of the sun to generate electricity. Solar thermal is a technology that uses the power of the sun to heat water for your home.

+ Is Solar Thermal suitable for my property?

Almost all properties with a roof in good condition are suitable for a solar thermal system. Ideally the roof would have a pitch around 40 to 45 degrees and face approximately south. However our team of surveyors have years of experience, helping customers make the right choice in solar thermal system installation. They are always happy to offer detailed advice and solutions for any structural and size restrictions.

+ Do I need planning permission?

Using solar thermal panels on the roof of a single dwelling house is usually considered to be within 'permitted development rights' under planning law, so there is usually no need to apply for planning permission.
