The Boiler Upgrade Scheme launched on 1st April 2022. The scheme aims to replace the Renewable Heat Incentive and will offer grants of £7,500 to eligible homeowners and small businesses in England and Wales.

Find out more about the scheme and how to apply.

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government scheme which will provide grants to encourage property owners to install low carbon heating systems such as heat pumps. It is open to domestic and small non-domestic properties in England and Wales and will run from 2022 to 2028.

Changing the way we heat our homes and properties can help us to reduce carbon emissions and address climate change issues, however the cost of installation can be a barrier for many households.

Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you can get:

  • £7,500 off the cost and installation of an air source heat pump

  • £7,500 off the cost and installation of a ground source heat pump

The grant will only cover biomass boilers in rural locations and in properties that are not connected to the gas grid.

Who is eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

You may be eligible if you:

  • live in England or Wales

  • own your property (whether this is a home or a small non-domestic property)

The property will need to have:

  • an installation capacity up to 45kWth (this covers most homes)

  • a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation (unless you have an insulation exemption)

New build properties will not normally be eligible. The only exception is if you’re building your own home.

Our team can advise whether a low carbon heating system is suitable for your property.

What will the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is designed to help reduce the total cost of installing a low carbon, renewable heating system. This one-off payment of £5000-£6000 can support you with the costs of installation, but will not cover the complete cost.

The scheme offers:

  • £7,500 off the cost and installation of an air source heat pump

  • £7,500 off the cost and installation of a ground source heat pump (in certain locations)
