Tips on utilising your Solar PV energy during Winter

With winter on the horizon, we’re seeing less daylight and greatly reduced yields from Solar PV systems. With this in mind, you may want to consider some changes to your energy usage to minimise drawing power from the grid. Here are some useful tips on how to be more energy efficient in winter:

  • Use appliances during the day: Run high-usage appliances like dishwashers and washing machines during the day when the sun is shining and they can be run entirely from Solar power.
  • Stagger appliance use: Run appliances one at a time to avoid drawing more power than your inverter allows.
  • Use energy-efficient appliances: More energy-efficient appliances will reduce your overall energy demand, so be sure to upgrade to more energy efficient appliances and devices across the home.
  • Use timers: Use timers on appliances that can run while you’re out during the day or during times when power is in excess.
  • Monitor your energy usage: Use a smart meter to monitor your electricity usage and identify areas for improvement.
  • Consider battery storage: Store excess energy generated during the day for use at night or during power outages.
  • Ensure your solar panels are clean and free of debris: Regularly maintain your solar panels to ensure they are working efficiently. This could involve using a cleaning company or ensuring trees are not overhanging and they are free from leaves etc.
