What is the Renewable Heat Incentive and how much could you claim?

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a UK Government scheme set up to encourage uptake of renewable heat technologies amongst householders, communities and businesses through financial incentives. Find out how much you could claim if you decide to install a renewable heat source in your home or project.

Who is eligible for payments under the scheme?

If you decide to install one of the following renewable heating technologies from Total Renewable Solutions, you could be eligible for cash payments over 7 year period which can significantly contribute to the cost of installing your system.

Biomass (wood pellets) boilers
Biomass pellet stoves with integrated boilers
Ground source heat pump
Air source heat pump
Solar thermal panels

The amount you receive depends on a number of factors – including the technology you install, the latest tariffs available for each technology and – in some cases – metering. Our expert surveyors can discuss your eligibility with you as part of your project.

The tariffs that determine the rates for your Domestic RHI payments are set by BEIS (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) and the current tariffs are:

Renewable heating technology Current tariff (p/kWh) Uplifted tariff (p/kWh)
Biomass 3.85 6.54
Air Source Heat Pump 7.63 10.18
Ground Source Heat Pump 19.64 19.86

While you have to consider the initial costs of installing a renewable heating system, most people will see a significant decrease in their heating bills quite quickly. Combined with the RHI payments you can receive, and you will not be left out of pocket.

For a more detailed idea of how much you could claim, you can use the RHI payments calculator provided by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Alternatively, If you decide to install a Solar PV system you may be eligible for Feed in Tariffs payments.

How do you apply to receive RHI payments?

Before you can install any renewable heat technology and before you can claim RHI, you must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) that is no more than two years old. You also need to ensure that your installer is registered with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, which ensures that manufacturers and installers comply with industry standards.

When you are ready to apply for RHI, you need to complete the RHI application form and submit it to the energy regulator, Ofgem, which is free when you apply through their website. Alternatively if you cannot apply online, phone Ofgem on 0300 003 0744 to complete the application over the phone with an adviser. You must apply to Ofgem within 12 months of your renewable system being commissioned, to qualify for RHI payments.
